CHRIS WAGSTAFF

Chris Wagstaff is an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham. He worked for the NHS for 14 years before entering Higher Education.  He is a clinical nurse specialist in mental health and brings this experience to his role.

Chris is the programme director for the MSc in Nursing; his responsibilities are to ensure the design and delivery of high-quality learning opportunities for students on the programme. He provides strategic oversight and direction of the programme.  He provides the ‘glue’ between modules by supporting and bringing together module leaders to facilitate the design and delivery of a cohesive programme.  He is also the admissions lead for the programme.

Chris currently has six PhD students, who are from a variety of healthcare backgrounds.  Chris is an active member of the Risk, Abuse & Violence (RAV) research programme.  His research is usually qualitative or mixed methods in nature and he frequently collaborates with colleagues in Brazil.  He is currently developing a shared postgraduate teaching program with Universidade de São Paulo.  Chris helped develop and launch the first programme for mental health nursing in Guyana, at the University of Guyana.  He delivers a few lectures there every year and also has dissertation students.
